Although SADC has made significant progress towards regional economic integration, a number of challenges still exist that require attention at national and regional levels. These include overlapping memberships to intergovernmental bodies, which also strain Member States’ resources and implementation capacity; lack of sustainable financing for development;  subtle competition amongst SADC Member States; inadequate/weak human resources; poor coordination of programmes at the national level; few/inadequate consultations among stakeholders; macro-economic frameworks that are not harmonized; weak implementation of regional policies and protocols that relate to economic development and integration; marginalization of people aspects of regional integration; poor institutional and infrastructural frameworks; and restricted policy space and resources to implement key regional projects.
